Learning to roll a kayak is one of the most rewarding milestones for any kayaker. The ultimate goal is to develop a smooth, effortless roll that becomes second nature. James Manke will guide you through the physics of kayak rolling, helping you understand the mechanics behind the movement. We'll focus on a reliable layback sweep roll, one of the most common and effective rolls for sea kayaking.
The session begins with an hour on land, where we'll explore the physics of rolling and break down the key elements. This will be followed by a demonstration, and then you'll spend a couple of hours in the water practicing with a partner. By working in pairs, you'll not only get hands-on experience but also have the opportunity to learn how to teach the roll—an excellent way to reinforce your own understanding and skills.
