STAY SALTY CANADA
Full Requirements and Documentation
How Many Students Per Workshop?
The Stay Salty team is led by two experienced instructors, Eiichi Ito and James Manke. Each workshop operates at a 1:6 instructor-to-student ratio, allowing for up to 12 students per session. There is a minimum of 8 students in order to run a workshop. If there’s additional interest, we can either schedule a second workshop or add an Instructor Training Day (see below) on the day prior to the event. Instructors who complete this training may then join Eiichi and James as co-instructors the following day. Each co-instructor added allows for four additional students, and workshop hours are extended accordingly to ensure every participant receives full value. It is essential that any co-instructor working alongside Eiichi and James has completed the Instructor Training Day to maintain consistency with the Stay Salty teaching methodology, the standard that participants expect and pay for. All co-instructors must follow this method when assisting at a Stay Salty workshop.
Co-Instruction & Instructor Training Day (Optional)
When workshops exceed 12 participants, an Instructor Training Day may be scheduled. A minimum of 6 instructors is required to run this session. The training day focuses on ensuring teaching consistency and alignment with Stay Salty techniques. It includes a comprehensive breakdown of theory and refined teaching methods, followed by an in-water rolling session where instructors practice teaching one another and develop new skills.
Being a Host
As a host, your role is simple and vital. You’ll help identify a suitable venue and provide local insight and promotion to fill the workshop, and provide a parking space for Eiichi and James’ motorhome during the event (a campground or suitable lot works perfectly). We don’t require meals or additional accommodations, just a place to park. If the venue is a campground, Stay Salty will cover its own site rental fees. Please note that, due to the significant costs of touring such as RV rental, fuel, flights, and administration, hosts are not paid for organizing venues or participants. Stay Salty’s mission is to inspire and grow local paddling communities, encouraging ongoing engagement with local instructors long after the tour moves on. We’re here to build the stoke and share the passion for Greenland-style kayaking worldwide.
Venue Location
Please confirm your venue location using latitude and longitude so we can add it to the official Stay Salty Tour Map, including directions and parking details. An ideal venue for teaching kayak rolling should offer clean water with a firm, non-muddy bottom and calm conditions suitable for focused practice. Saltwater environments are preferred, though lakes or rivers are also acceptable.
Permits & Permissions
It’s important that the venue does not require new permits. If permits are necessary, the host should already hold one that can be used. Applying for new permits is often time-consuming and beyond our budget for single workshop events.
Registration, Administration & Costs
All registration and administration are handled directly through the Stay Salty platform, not by the host. The workshop fee is $225 CAD per person for a 4-hour session plus applicable taxes. The Instructor Training Day is $225 CAD per instructor plus applicable taxes. Instructors attending the training day are required to participate in the following day’s workshop as a practicum, putting their teaching techniques into action under Eiichi and James’ guidance. There is no additional fee or compensation for this practicum, as it forms an integral part of the instructor training process.
Cancellations & Refunds
If a workshop does not reach 8 students registered before the tour begins, it will be removed from the tour schedule and a full refund will be issued to all registrants. Cancellations may occur up to one week prior to the scheduled date in your area. If the student chooses to cancel before the event then the cancellation agreement is within the Manke Kayak refund & cancellation policy.Â
Insurance & Liability
All Canada-wide insurance and liability coverage is provided under Manke Kayak, the organization affiliated with Stay Salty Canada. Hosts are not required to provide additional insurance or liability coverage. All participants and co-instructors must sign a waiver prior to participation.
